What Is the Wilks Score?

The Wilks Score is a coefficient used in powerlifting to compare lifters across different weight classes. A 500-pound total at 148 lbs bodyweight represents a very different level of strength than a 500-pound total at 242 lbs. The Wilks formula normalizes these differences using a polynomial equation based on bodyweight and gender, producing a single number that allows fair comparison.

Developed by Robert Wilks for the International Powerlifting Federation, the formula uses fifth-degree polynomial coefficients that were derived from competition data. While newer formulas exist (DOTS, GL), the Wilks Score remains the most widely recognized and used in competition settings. It's particularly useful for determining best lifter awards at meets where athletes compete across weight classes.

How to Interpret Your Score

A Wilks Score below 200 is typical for recreational lifters. Scores of 300-400 represent solid intermediate to advanced strength. Scores above 400 are competitive at the regional or national level. Elite lifters score 450+, and world-class athletes can exceed 500. These numbers apply to the powerlifting total (squat + bench + deadlift combined).

Keep in mind that the Wilks Score was designed for the three-lift total in competition powerlifting. Using it for a single lift gives a relative comparison but wasn't the formula's intended purpose. Also, the formula slightly favors mid-range weight classes — very light and very heavy lifters may find other coefficients (like DOTS) give a more accurate comparison. Regardless of which formula you prefer, the value is in tracking your own score over time as a measure of relative strength improvement.
