What Is a One-Rep Max and Why Does It Matter?
Your one-rep max (1RM) is the maximum amount of weight you can lift for a single repetition with proper form. It's the gold standard for measuring absolute strength in any given exercise and serves as the foundation for nearly every serious strength training program.
Knowing your 1RM matters because percentage-based programming depends on it. Whether you're running a 5/3/1 cycle, a linear periodization block, or a peaking program for competition, every set and rep prescription is calculated as a percentage of your max. An inaccurate 1RM means your entire training program is built on a shaky foundation — weights are either too light to drive adaptation or too heavy to allow proper recovery.
After 44 years of training — including nine surgeries and thirteen damaged discs — I can tell you that knowing your true max is about more than ego. It's about precision. Training at 85% of your actual max produces very different results than training at 85% of a number you guessed at. This calculator exists because I got tired of seeing lifters either sandbagging their training or grinding themselves into injury.
The Science Behind the Formulas
This calculator uses seven well-established prediction formulas, each developed through different research methodologies. No single formula is perfect — they each have strengths and limitations depending on the rep range, the lift, and the individual.
Epley Formula
Developed by Boyd Epley, this is probably the most widely used 1RM formula in strength and conditioning. It uses a linear relationship: 1RM = weight × (1 + reps/30). It tends to be most accurate in the 2–10 rep range and may overestimate at higher rep counts.
Brzycki Formula
Matt Brzycki's formula uses an inverse relationship: 1RM = weight × (36 / (37 - reps)). It tends to produce slightly more conservative estimates than Epley, particularly at lower rep counts. Many coaches prefer Brzycki for programming because a slightly conservative max means less chance of overreaching.
Lombardi Formula
This formula uses an exponential approach: 1RM = weight × reps^0.10. It produces estimates that fall between Epley and Brzycki, making it a solid middle-ground choice.
Why We Average All Seven
Each formula was developed using different populations and methodologies. By calculating all seven and presenting the average, this tool gives you the most reliable estimate possible. The spread between the highest and lowest predictions also tells you something — a wide spread suggests more uncertainty, usually because the rep count was high. For the most accurate results, use a weight you can lift for 3–5 clean reps.
How to Use Your One-Rep Max
Once you have your estimated 1RM, use the percentage chart above to program your training. Here are the general training zones:
90–100% — Max Strength
1–3 reps. Pure neural drive. Reserved for peaking phases and competition. High injury risk if you're not prepared.
80–90% — Strength
3–6 reps. The bread and butter of strength training. Heavy enough to build maximal strength, manageable enough for consistent volume.
65–80% — Hypertrophy
6–12 reps. Optimal range for muscle growth. Enough mechanical tension with sufficient time under tension.
50–65% — Endurance / Recovery
12–20+ reps. Builds muscular endurance, great for deload weeks, and useful for rehab work around injuries.
Important Safety Considerations
A calculated 1RM is an estimate, not a guarantee. Your actual max on any given day depends on sleep quality, nutrition, stress levels, accumulated fatigue, and a dozen other factors. Here are the rules I've learned the hard way over four decades:
- •Never test a true 1RM alone. Always have a competent spotter or use safety pins/straps set at the appropriate height.
- •Use sub-maximal sets for estimation. There's no reason to grind out a true 1RM unless you're competing. A clean set of 3 gives you a reliable estimate with far less injury risk.
- •Form always trumps numbers. If your form breaks down, that rep doesn't count. A 400-pound bench press with your butt six inches off the pad and a four-inch range of motion tells you nothing useful.
- •Account for training history. If you're coming back from a layoff or working around an injury, use 90% of your calculated max as your programming number. Your connective tissue needs time to catch up to your muscle strength.
- •Re-test regularly. Your 1RM should be recalculated every 4–8 weeks as you progress. Training with an outdated max means training with outdated percentages.

I built this calculator because the ones I found online were either ad-riddled messes or only used a single formula. When I'm programming my own training — working around six herniated discs, seven bulging discs, and the aftermath of nine surgeries — I need numbers I can trust.
Your one-rep max is a tool, not a trophy. It's a reference point for intelligent programming, not something to chase at the expense of your joints and spine. The strongest version of yourself isn't the one who hit the biggest number once — it's the one who's still training decades from now. Use the numbers. Respect the numbers. And keep showing up.
